Looking for guidance on how to make your small business more sustainable?

To understand what needs to be done, let’s first look at what is happening today.

Headlines like these are commonplace. Looking at these factors on a global scale helps us to see how we are being affected in our homes and businesses, locally.

It is time to face the challenges and understand them so that we may adopt healthier more sustainable ways of living and working.

Climate change is already having an impact on our lives.
How will it shape our future?

The Challenges

FLIP FOR POTENTIAL IMPACTS TO YOUR BUSINESS
GLOBAL TEMPERATURE RISE
The Earth's average surface temperature has risen about 1.2°C since the late 19th century, largely due to increased CO₂ emissions from human activities like burning fossil fuels and deforestation.
IMPACTS ON BUSINESSES
  • Energy cost increases due to temperature variations.
  • Increased possibility of business disruption due to adverse weather events.
  • Increase in transport costs.
  • Supply chain challenges and delivery delays.
GLOBAL MELTING ICE
Polar ice caps and glaciers are melting rapidly. The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass which have increased by about 20 centimeters since 1880. The rate of sea-level rise is accelerating, putting coastal cities at risk.
IMPACTS ON BUSINESSES
  • Climate adaptation measures required due to flooding risks.
  • Increased possibility of business disruption due to adverse weather events.
  • Increase in transport costs.
  • Supply chain challenges and delivery delays.
GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY LOSS
Changes in temperature, habitat destruction, and altered ecosystems are pushing many species towards extinction, impacting biodiversity and ecosystem services like pollination and carbon sequestration.
IMPACTS ON BUSINESSES
  • Companies may need to find alternative suppliers for some raw materials.
  • Raw material availability and shipment delays.
  • Supply chain challenges and delivery delays.
GLOBAL PARIS AGREEMENT
In 2015, nearly all the world’s nations agreed to limit global warming to well below 2°C, with efforts to limit it to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement. The EU aims to cut emissions by 55% by 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2050.
IMPACTS ON BUSINESSES
  • Increase in regulations and red tape.
  • Business owners try to keep the momentum going despite new leaders extremist views.

How can we become more Sustainable ?

On a grand scale what are the solutions ?

THE SOLUTIONS

CLIMATE ADAPTATION

Infrastructure Resilience: Building climate-resilient infrastructure, such as flood defenses and drought-tolerant crops, helps communities adapt to extreme weather.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Solar, Wind, and Hydropower: These renewable energy sources can significantly reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

REFORESTATION

Restoring Forests: Trees act as carbon sinks, absorbing CO₂ from the atmosphere. Protecting existing forests and planting new trees is essential.

TECH INNOVATION

Green Tech: Research into new technologies for renewable energy, energy storage, sustainable agriculture, and carbon capture can accelerate solutions.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Waste Management: Recycling, composting, and reducing waste production can limit the emissions from landfills and incineration.

CSRD

  • The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive is a European Union (EU) regulation that mandates more extensive and standardized sustainability reporting by companies. It is part of the EU’s broader effort to enhance corporate transparency and accountability in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters.
  • The CSRD was formally adopted in 2022, and its requirements are being phased in over several years:
  • 2024: Large public-interest companies with over 500 employees will start reporting under the new standards, with reports due in 2025.
  • 2025: All large companies, regardless of their listing status, will be required to report, with reports due in 2026.
  • 2026: All companies listed on EU regulated markets (except micro-enterprises) will have to comply, with reports due in 2027.

ISO140467

  • An International Standard effective since 2018.”Greenhouse gases Carbon footprint of products Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication”. It provides guidelines for calculating and reporting the carbon footprint of products, focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout a product’s life cycle. In summary this is a crucial standard for organizations aiming to measure, report, and reduce the carbon footprint of their products, playing a significant role in global sustainability efforts.

ISO 14064

  • An international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that provides guidelines for quantifying, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals.

BCORP

  • A certification awarded to for-profit companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. The certification is administered by the nonprofit organization B Lab, which assesses companies based on their impact on various stakeholders, including workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.

GRI

  • An independent international organization that provides a comprehensive framework for sustainability reporting. The GRI Standards are widely used by organizations worldwide to report on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts in a consistent and transparent manner.

ECO VADIS

  • A global platform that provides sustainability ratings for businesses, helping organizations assess and improve their environmental, social, and ethical performance. Founded in 2007, EcoVadis has become one of the leading providers of sustainability ratings, with a network that includes more than 100,000 companies across 175 countries.
